Professional Video Game Development Courses On The Rise

By Madison Lockwood

The University of Southern California has announced the introduction of a bachelor’s program in video game development. With the advent of sophisticated games such as MMOs and the merging of commercial interests with virtual reality, it is possible that USC did this as an academic exercise rather than a place to park its football players.

Other mainstream universities have similar programs, among them Carnegie Mellon, Georgia Tech and Southern Methodist University. The game industry has cracked the seven billion dollar mark in annual revenue. More important from an academic point of view perhaps, is the prospect of applying game theory, analysis and development skills to cultural or economic environments that are not strictly about games. Major game producer Electronic Arts has helped to underwrite the USC program simply because of its focus on non-commercial applications.

It’s a fair guess that the skills and analytical tools one might develop in a video game liberal arts degree program will be increasingly applicable in commercial online applications. The Internet has become a major commercial marketplace, one that functions more efficiently as the websites utilized for commercial exchange become more sophisticated and, to some degree, have high level graphics.

With that in mind, the nuts and bolts of a video game education still have to do with the development of a sophisticated piece of software. Critical skills include digital animation, game design and game programming.

Basic job descriptions within the business have included:

Programmer

A programmer can work on the game engine, the artificial intelligence features, the tools, hardware and network.

Designer

A designer – or artists – can be an animator, 3D artist/modeler or 2D artist/texturer.

Level Designer

Though it sounds similar and uses some of the same skills as a designer, level design is a job unto itself. Level designers need to have some art proficiency, but must also have good spatial awareness, organizational skills and lightning effects knowledge.

Writer

This is a growing position in the game community. There is more than just a manual to write; the story behind the game must be well-crafted and compelling. Every speaking character must have a script. Documentation is still an important element, though; as it is a necessary part of any software creation, and games are certainly no exception.

Behind these technical/creative roles are production managers, game modeling experts, and directors – much as with a film. Interactive design is an integral part of any video game and is also a key function of many websites. The transition of video game production methods to uses outside the game industry is well underway. The sophisticated graphics used in videogames are increasingly appearing in online commercials with high-gloss production values.

It will be the Internet and its importance as an economic engine that connects the video game major with the business world and provides job opportunities beyond the gaming industry. The trained, experienced level designer will find opportunities in high-end web site development companies that provide sophisticated sites for corporate sales and presentation purposes.

The flow of a high quality website (visit BMW USA for example) requires almost as much scripting as a game does, although much of the script appears as print instead of dialogue. And the use of artificial intelligence (AI) as a sales tool is probably not too far down the road – a method of taking a retail customer to the product that will suit them. Video games have forced the development of skill sets that are becoming meaningful to mainstream industries.

Extension:ImageMap

The ImageMap extension allows clickable image maps. An image map is a list of coordinates in a specific image, which hyperlinks areas of the image to multiple destinations (in contrast to a normal image link, in which the entire area of the image links to a single destination). For example, a map of the world may have each country hyperlinked to further information about that country. The intention of an image map is to provide an easy way of linking various parts of an image without dividing the image into separate image files.

The above example always links to the Main Page, no matter where you click on it. To find out more about the image, click on the blue “i” icon . An alternative way to create such a linked image, without using this extension would be with

The above example links to many different pages, depending on where you click it. To find out more about the image, click on the double-rectangle icon .

The contents of an <imagemap> tag consists of blank lines, comments (starting with #) and logical lines. The first logical line specifies the image to be displayed. This must be in the same format as an ordinary MediaWiki image link, except without the enclosing and . If the first line specifies a “thumb” or “frame” image, then the first line’s caption and any |alt= parameter are treated as the image’s caption and alt text in the usual way; otherwise, the first line’s |alt= parameter (or, if absent, any caption) specifies the image’s alt text. In neither case does the image itself have title text (often used for tooltips); any title text is taken from the regions described in later lines.

Further lines are split into tokens, separated by whitespace. The function of each line is determined by the first token in the line. All coordinates are according to the full-size image, not the visible image. They should be specified as distance from left edge (horizontal pixel count), distance from top (vertical pixel count).

All coordinates are specified relative to the source image. The image can be scaled using thumbnail syntax, in which case the image map coordinates will be automatically scaled as well.

All links are given in either the form Page title or description. In the latter case, the part after the pipe “|” becomes the title attribute of the link—in most browsers, it will pop up as a tooltip when the user hovers over it; the part after the pipe also becomes the alt text for the link. If no explicit link description is given, the page title is used.

Areas which overlap give precedence to the first link listed.

Make sure that uploads and ImageMagick are installed:

To users running MediaWiki 1.24 or earlier:

Those instructions describe the new way of installing extensions since MediaWiki 1.25. If you need to install this extension in earlier versions, instead of wfLoadExtension( 'ImageMap' );, you need to use:

For MediaWiki 1.22+, you may install this extension using built-in Composer support. MediaWiki versions prior to 1.22 can use Composer via Extension:ExtensionInstaller.

If you want this extension (as with most tag extensions) to parse template parameters, magic words, or parser functions, you will need to use #tag syntax, such as w:Template:Click did. In this case the vertical bar | must be replaced by a template , where the source text of the template is | (except when they appear inside links or parameters).

These modifications allow the template size to be adjusted on the edited (target) page and eliminate the need to create duplicate templates of various image sizes.

Where {} is the input parameter “1” and a default image size of 640px. Note: the input parameter requires a text string ending with “px” to function properly. For example, calling a template 400px will display the template at 400 pixels.

To convert the standard (existing) image maps to this optional format:

Making Apple Wine Some Easy Tips

More On This Topic:

Making Apple Wine-Some Easy Tips

by

Mach Donald

Apple wine is one of the most popular fruit wines available. This wine is prepared from pure apple or together with other fruits.

Though perfect fruit is needed for most wines, windfall apples make top

Apple Wine

. You don t have to peel or core the apples, but you can cut away naturally any badly spoiled parts that look brown.

If you find it difficult to crush apples, there are ways to do this easily. At first, wash the apples in a sulphite solution of approximately 100 ppm. It will remove dust, grass and leaves simultaneously will destroy unwanted micro-organisms. Then drain the extra water and pack the apples into polythene bags and put them in a freezer for 2 days. When you will take them out, they would be soft so that you can crush them with your hands.

If a freezer is not on hand, put the washed apples in a polythene bag and hit them with a hammer. When all apples are crushed, pour the contents into water having sulphite and citric acid to avoid oxidation.

Other way to crush apples is to put the apples in a strong polythene or wooden bin and then to crush into them using a 10 cm. (4 in.) cube of wood at the end of a broom handle.

Besides, you can also liquidise them or cut each apple into about very small pieces.

To prepare

Apple Wine

, apples always need to be fermented on the pulp. If a big bin is not readily available for this purpose, you may use large polythene bag inside a cardboard container. You may use a rubber band or a wire tie to gather and fasten the neck. Do not tight so much that the carbon dioxide can t escape.

After fermentation of the pulp, give press to extract all the juice. Transfer the pulp out of the bin into a recently sterilized linen, Hessian, or nylon bag put inside the press. Initially the juice will run free, and then you may have to shake the bag a little. When applying pressure, do so from time to time instead of constantly. It helps for better run. When there is no more juice to be extracted, use the apple cake to make a second-run wine.

Typically damson, blackberry, elderberry, or plum wine is being made simultaneously. By adding the apple cake to the other fruit, the body and flavor of that wine can be improved. On the other hand, the two pulp deposits may be combined together and added to a grape juice concentrate wine to enhance its body and flavor. Spent apple and elderberry pulp in combination with a white grape juice concentrate can make an nice rose.

It is always beneficial making the much amount possible of

Apple Wine

. It mixes well with other wines and is helpful to give a fulfill look to the jars that are not full irrespective of what sort of wine they hold – and it makes a wonderful base for liqueurs.

30 brightly coloured mummies discovered in Egyptian necropolis

Monday, April 13, 2009

Archaeologists have found approximately 30 beautifully preserved mummies in a 4,000 year old Egyptian necropolis which held 53 tombs.

Supervisor of Antiquities for Middle Egypt Dr. Abdel-Rahman El-Ayedi’s team established his archaeological site in the Faiyum Oasis near the El-Lahun Egyptian pyramid which is just south of Cairo.

Besides the mummies, the team found masks, amulets, clay pots and an offering table located in a funerary chapel. The chapel dates back to about 30 BC to 337 AD.

The amazing preservation of the linen wrapped mummies revealed bright decorations and writings in bright turquoise, terracotta and gold colours which had not faded over time.

“The mission found dozens of mummies in 53 rock-hewn tombs dating to the Middle Kingdom,” said Zahi Hawass. “Four of the mummies date back to the 22nd Dynasty (931 to 725 BC) and are considered some of the most beautiful mummies found.”

Minor damage from 5.8 quake shows California has learned its lessons

By Joel Rubin, David Pierson and Mitchell Landsberg, Los Angeles Times Staff Writers

July 30, 2008

The earthquake that rattled Southern California on Tuesday might have caused devastation if it had taken place in some parts of the world, but relatively strict building codes ensured that most of the region’s infrastructure — homes, schools, freeways and rail systems — rolled with the magnitude 5.8 punch, which was centered near Chino Hills and felt as far as Las Vegas.

As aftershocks continued to reverberate, officials inspected airports, freeways and buildings, and reported little damage from the quake, which occurred at 11:42 a.m. and was the first significant temblor in more than a decade to be centered in an urban area of California. The biggest strains were felt in phone and Internet systems, which buckled due to overwhelming demand in the minutes after the jolt.

The quake struck hardest in an area of San Bernardino County that has seen massive growth in population and housing in the last decade. That meant that the buildings shaken the hardest were mostly built under California’s strictest building codes, updated in 1997 in response to the 6.7 Northridge quake of 1994. That kept damage to a minimum. Only minor injuries were reported, three at an outpatient medical clinic in Brea and five at a building in the Wilshire district of Los Angeles.

Aromatherapy Facts For The Average Person

Submitted by: Morgan F Turley

Today, we have many options when it comes to healing and healthcare. In addition to conventional clinical medicine, alternative methods have been brought to light for the curious. Aromatherapy is one of those alternative medicines. It works by using the scents of burning candles made of certain essential plant oils. These oils are specified for use in certain areas of healing, such as mood, stress and, in some situations, bodily wounds.

One of the popular compounds used in these candles and ointments in tea tree oil. It is used for it anti-microbial effects and there is indication of helpfulness in fighting bacterial, viral or fungal infections. Some medical conditions may not react in the way that is hoped but mood and cognitive functioning often get the benefits of this form of therapy.

This method of holistic treatment was first used by early 1900 European scientists. Since then, it has become one of the most popularly used methods because of therapeutic benefits. The plant materials are dried and heated, filtered and developed into aromatic oils that, when reheated, release relaxing, mood altering scents into the air. This concept was used in a topical cream that was developed for healing wounded soldiers in World War II. Whether or not it has true bodily healing abilities is still being debated, although the mood benefits are clearly seen and widely accepted.

This method helps alleviate one of the biggest problems we have in society today. This is stress. Stress affects people to the extent that their physical and mental health are greatly impaired. On the physical side, stress can cause high blood pressure, which can lead to a myriad of health problems, like a heightened risk of heart attack or stroke. Heart diseases can come from stress and high blood pressure, as well. People will often turn to conventional medicine and doctors to help them fight the effects of stress on their minds and body. Others would rather try more holistic or natural ways to relax and live happy. Other methods are massage therapy, acupuncture and meditation.

Websites and stores can be found that supply candles and creams made for specific purposes, such as relaxation, awareness, and alertness to name a few. It is a low cost and effective treatment for people who are dealing with heavy stress or some type of trauma.

Many people believe that natural medicine has as much if not more effect on the human body and mind than conventional methods. It is believed that ridding the body of the toxins we inhale and absorb every day will help a person in mind and body to live a healthier, happier life. Instead of taking a daily medication or going to weekly therapy sessions, researching and using aromatherapy is the choice of many. It is good to remember that along with any alternative or conventional medicine taken to help heal should be accompanied by a healthy lifestyle. Eat the proper amount of food, taking in the correct nutrition. Get a healthy amount of sleep and think positive thoughts. These are helpful when dealing with excessive stress or recovering from an injury.

California Senator Carole Migden says medication may have caused car crash

Thursday, May 24, 2007

California Senator Carole Migden has revealed that she is suffering from leukemia and that medication prescribed to her may have contributed to a car accident she caused on May 18. Earlier Migden said that she was driving her state-leased SUV while reaching for her cell phone.

The announcement comes when witnesses called police to say that Migden was weaving along Highway 12 in Solano County, California. They also reported that she drove over the center median on several occasions and that after the accident she got out of her car and proceeded to yell, “I’m a senator!.” Witnesses say that she “didn’t seem all there at the time.”

According to Migden, doctors diagnosed her with leukemia in 1997, but did not reveal to the public her disease because she did not want “pity” from anyone. Migden also says that back in February, she was pronounced as “disease free.”

Migden says that she had an unexplained medical event and that her medication claim is not an excuse for her driving.

“I owe an explanation to the public and myself and, in particular, the person I hurt. I don’t have a recollection of what happened. I can only conclude I had a medical event I can’t explain. It’s not an excuse; it may be an explanation,” said Migden.

Authorities have stated that they recommended charges of “unsafe driving” be filed against Migden, but that the incident still be investigated.
